The catalogue accompanying the monographic exhibition Aleksander Gierymski 1850–1901 presented at the National Museum in Warsaw between March and September 2014. This monumental publication reflects and thoroughly documents the current state of research on Gierymski’s oeuvre. Apart from several hundred reproductions of the artist’s works (paintings, drawings and prints), it also features rich contextual iconography (i.a., photographs from the time, photographs of the artist, conservator’s photographs) as well as complete documentation of all known Gierymski’s works (including those lost and attributed to him), with the history and provenance of the works, information on their owners, exhibition history and archive materials. The most outstanding works are accompanied by notes written by the catalogue’s authors and a conservator’s commentary. The publication also features articles discussing the different aspects of Aleksander Gierymski’s art, i.a., in the context of European painting, and a chronology of the artist’s life and work.
