SPECIAL LECTURE / Malevich in Kyiv. The Incredible Return

At the end of 2015 the whole world of art was stunned by the news of new texts and documents by Kazimir Malevich found in Kyiv regarding the artist teaching in the Kyiv Art Institute in late 1920's and founding of the Experiment Office, a kind of scientific institute organized by the artist. More than 70 pages of printed text spent almost 90 years in the archives of Marian Kropyvnytskiy who had been a teacher and assistant at the Experiment Office.
Kazimir Malevich is one of the most famous artists in the world. He was born in Kyiv and lived in Ukraine until he turned 17. He received his first education here, he created his first artworks here. The lecture will be focused on the least known period of the world famous artist and the incredible story of the return to the city of his birth.

About the book Kazimir Malevich. Kyiv Period 1928–1930
This publication presents Kazimir Malevich’s theoretical legacy, which is first and foremost connected to the time he spent in Kyiv and in Ukraine. During this period, he taught at the Kyiv Art Institute and published in the journals Nova Generatsiia [New Generation] and Almanah-Avanhard [Avant-Garde]. In addition to these topics, the book also covers his letters, memoirs, and various publications related to his exhibition at the Kyiv Art Gallery in the 1930.
Kazimir Malevich. Kyiv Period 1928–1930 is unique in that it includes not only the artist’s well-known publications, but also texts of his that were only discovered in 2015, when they were found in Kyiv in the archive of artist Marian Kropyvnytsky. In the late 1920s, Kropyvnytsky was Malevich’s personal assistant at the Kyiv Art Institute. Compiled and edited
with annotations and introduction by Tetyana Filevska; edited by Wendy Salmond; translated into English by Marta Skorupsky and Wendy Salmond. English version was presented at the Ukrainian Avant-Garde Forum in February 2017 in New York during The College Art Association Annual Conference.
