LECTURE / Nubia in Christian Africa
2019-12-18 / 18:00
6 PM
The perspicacity of Kazimierz Michałowski (1901-1981) not only brought to light Faras Cathedral with its splendid wall paintings, but a whole forgotten world, that of Christian Nubia. Since the 1960s, huge advances have been made in the recovery of this new world and its legacy, of which the rehabilitation of the Old Nubian language offers a signal example. Yet the assessment of the thousand years of Christian Nubia as a historical and cultural phenomenon is still today work in progress. This lecture looks both backward and forward, focusing on the literary culture of medieval Nubia and its setting in the northeast African landscape of its time.
Jacques van der Vliet (1952) holds a PhD in Coptic studies from Leiden University, The Netherlands. He is Jozef M.A. Janssen Professor of Religions of Ancient Egypt at Radboud University, Nijmegen, visiting research fellow of the Netherlands Institute for the Near East, Leiden, and former president of the International Association for Coptic Studies.
