KIRK SAVAGE: Professor, History of Art & Architecture, University of Pittsburgh; author of MONUMENT WARS: Washington, D.C., the National Mall, and the Transformation of the Memorial Landscape (2009).

His major works include:

Kirk Savage, author of Standing Soldiers, Kneeling Slaves: Race, War, and Monument in Nineteenth-Century America (1997), has offered readers a brilliant biography of the United States’ most significant memorial space, the Washington Mall. There have been previous histories of the Mall, although as Savage points out, the 19th century landscape has been largely ignored. But Savage does not just provide a chronology of change. He makes a compelling argument that the dynamic transformations of this particular memorial landscape reveal a “sea change in how Americans have understood and interacted with public monuments. From objects of reverence and emulation…monuments became spaces of reflection and psychological engagement”

His current book, Monument Wars: Washington, D.C., the National Mall, and the Transformation of the Memorial Landscape, published in Fall 2009 by the University of California Press, reconsiders the key public monuments and spaces of the capital within a narrative of nation building, spatial conquest, ecological destructiveness, and psychological trauma.
